The Set Sail Trust is delighted to announce their involvement in the Guernsey Sailing Trust’s community windsurfing for 2011. This is a project that aims to provide the opportunity for local teenagers to learn this sport.
The Set Sail Trust, a local charity that supports local maritime activities, has provided £2800 for 7 full sets of windsurfing rigs. The kit provided includes sails, masts, boom and all necessary connectors for the board. They are two sizes for young beginners and older more experienced surfers: 3.5m2 and 6.5m2.
The GST windsurfing project has been running for five years already with each year seeing more people participating. The project has been further developed for 2011 – with the GST now offering an after school windsurfing club, under the banner of the RYA initiative called Team 15.
The Team 15 classes were set up to give schools and special needs groups the opportunity to windsurf in Guernsey. Up to 12 children, typically aged 12-15 can take part. The club is open to any secondary school child and only costs £5 per session. The price has been purposely kept low to include as many young people as possible and appeal to all young people. This fits with the Guernsey Sailing Trust’s aim of enabling local children from all walks of life to experience and enjoy the fun and challenges involved with sailing, and to dispel beliefs that the sports are elitist.
Trustee Tony Tostevin said “The Set Sail Trust aims to increase participation in sea-sports for those who might not normally be able to take part. Windsurfing is great fun and that’s why we bought Team 15’s sails – to let young people experience the fun and excitement of windsurfing.
Rich, of the Guernsey Sailing Trust said “All our kids involved have really enjoyed using the new sails. The feedback at the end of the session from the kids was fantastic. The sails are a great addition to the Sailing Trusts windsurfing equipment and will really help in bringing the young people up to the next level of windsurfing. My thanks to all at the Set Sail Trust for the kind donation of these wonderful sails.”
In term–time, the new sails will be used at ‘Team 15’, every Thursday from 4-6pm at Ladies Bay. Summer holiday will see the time move to Friday mornings, from 9.30am -12.30pm, again at Ladies Bay. No previous windsurfing experience is necessary and all equipment is provided.
